Burnaby South High School Gym Basketball

“B” is for: Brilliant Basketball in Burnaby… Bravo Boys!

It’s been a slam dunk season for Burnaby basketball. The Burnaby South Rebels have clinched the provincial title in the AAAA tier. The Rebels are the top team in BC! The AAAA/Quad A tier is fiercely competitive, as the Rebels ousted every other qualified high school team in BC comprised of over 300 boys enrolled in grades 11 and 12. An amazing feat, as these boys have competed amongst schools with the largest pools of talent to draw from. Congratulations to the Rebels!

This outstanding win is all the more exciting as it’s the first time since 1979 that the Rebels have brought home the provincial championship! The banner will hang with pride in the Burnaby South gym for generations to come. This is a win for Burnaby South and the Burnaby School District as a whole to take pride in.

Pride is in Abundance at Burnaby South

The senior boys were supported by their legions of fans – including students, parents, and staff – who memorably stormed the gym floor at the Langley Events Centre the moment the title was won! Burnaby South is a close-knit community of learners, athletes, and citizens.

The Boys from Byrne Creek Were Runners Up in the AAA Championship Game!

The Byrne Creek Bulldogs came just a hair from clinching the provincial title for the Triple-A tier. However, they narrowly missed winning and were foiled from victory by the South Kamloops Titans. The nail-biting game ended 74-66 for the Kamloops boys. However, a AAA provincial final is definitely something to celebrate by all at Byrne Creek. And it’s fair to say that members of this team are superstars both within their school, and in the larger basketball community.

How Do the Provincials Work?

Provincial championships are played in most high school sports, and qualified teams head to the final tournament. In the case of basketball, 16 teams will qualify in each tier. The tiers are determined as follows: Single A is comprised of schools with boys enrolled in grades 11 or 12 (known as senior boys) totalling 1-85. AA is comprised of schools with senior boy enrollment of 86-199. AAA is comprised of senior boy enrollment of 200-299. The final, and largest tier, AAAA (or Quad A) is comprised of senior boy populations of over 300. The tier system ensures that schools compete with others of similar size.

There is also great depth in the junior team, meaning talented students in grade 10 will move up to play in the senior varsity team next year. Howard Tsumura, a respected sports journalist who runs the go-to website for many BC school sports, Varsity Letters, has predicted that Burnaby South are on track to win the 2019 title as well!
