Burnaby Mountain, with a student population of 1500, is located in the North-East region of Burnaby near Simon Fraser University. Mountain has a diverse student population and offers its students a wide range of programs and courses. From challenging academics, to respected performing arts programs, sports academies, and career training certification programs, Mountain has something to offer all of its students.
Advanced Placement at Mountain: Climb to the Top!
Mountain offers a broad range of Honours and AP courses, giving qualifying students the chance to earn university credit based on their AP exam results. Currently, Mountain offers AP courses in psychology, art history, physics, Mandarin, economics, human geography, biology, and many more. Last year, Mountain’s art history students went to Italy to see the priceless artwork they had been studying, visiting Venice, Rome, Verona, and Florence.
Music at Mountain: Going Places!
Many of Mountain’s music students attend a fun team-building retreat each fall to the Timberline Ranch in Maple Ridge, BC. Mountain’s music department is extensive with opportunities to pursue chamber choir (small ensemble choir), concert choir (a large choir from grades 8 through 12), vocal jazz, string orchestra, band, and jazz band.
Make Your Moves with Mountain Dance
Mountain’s Dance Department produces student performances with outstanding and cutting-edge choreography. From the buzz Mountain’s hip-hop crew generates at school performances, to guest teachers from different dance disciplines like Bollywood and ballroom, Mountain’s dance department transforms students who “don’t think they can dance” into confident and talented performing artists. The Dance Company has travelled around BC and won accolades for their performances, ensuring that Mountain dance students turn heads both within the school and beyond.
Career Training at Mountain: Shining Bright!
Thinking about a career in hospitality and event management? Mountain’s Hotel and Event Management Program offers students professional industry training in grade 11 or 12 – perfect for BC’s booming tourism sector, which is predicted to grow exponentially in the coming years! Mountain also has a respected Construction Electrician program, offering industry certification and work training hours from certified instructors in BC’s ever-expanding construction industry.
Clubs Abound at Mountain: Get Social!
Clubs at Mountain range from chess, debate, United Nations, broadcasting, break dancing, math, anime, and school newspaper. Clubs offer a chance to get to know other students who share similar interests.
Burnaby’s Swim Academy Helps Students Dive Into Their Passion
Mountain has a competitive swim program and offers students the opportunity to compete around BC at many swim meets throughout the year, while training extensively and pursuing their academic goals. Mountain’s proximity to SFU enables the swim team to train at the university’s Olympic-length pool.
From Wrestling to Snowboarding, “Find Your Fit” at Mountain
Mountain’s athletic department offers a host of exciting sports opportunities for its students. “Find your fit” in badminton, skiing, snowboarding, basketball, soccer, wrestling, field hockey, cross-country running, tennis, rugby, and more.
