Spotlight on Burnaby’s Secondary Schools: Burnaby South

Burnaby South Secondary School serves students living in the catchment area of Burnaby bordering Boundary Road, the Fraser River, Metrotown, and Byrne Road. It was first established in 1922 with its current building opening in 1993. The school has approximately 1,700 students, and notable alumni include former BC Premier Christy Clark. It has many exciting programs in academics, such as the AP Capstone Diploma Program, the arts, with a professional theatre on campus, and athletics. The British Columbia School for the Deaf is also located on the school campus.

AP Results at Burnaby South Significantly Higher than Provincial Average

The Burnaby South Advanced Placement Program is extensive and its students have placed above the provincial average in AP exam results. 86.7% of Burnaby South students in AP courses achieved exam marks of 3 or higher. This result would give these students credit for university-level courses. The percentage of British Columbia students as a whole with AP exam marks of 3 or higher is 80.3%.

Burnaby South is Home to the Computer Networking Technician Program

South has established a Computer Networking Technician Program, known as the Cisco Networking Academy. The Academy focuses on the core skills required to work as a computer technician and includes a 120-hour work training component. Students have found great success with this program, which has led to further study and work opportunities in the growing tech industry.

Go Rebels! Athletics at Burnaby South

Burnaby South – Home of the Rebels – offers exciting athletic opportunities. Students can participate in wrestling, badminton, swimming, dragon boating, hockey, cricket, basketball, volleyball, rugby, cross-country running, and more. The school boasts two full-sized gymnasiums and an indoor running track. Its athletics programs are complemented by a galvanising school spirit team called the RAC – Rebels Athletic Crew – who encourage South’s students (often through Tweets and other social media) to cheer on the school’s athletic teams. The infectious spirit of RAC – which boasts over 50 students as members – earned Burnaby South a School Spirit Award in 2017.

Join the Club!

Burnaby South has a wide variety of clubs for students to join. As well as the aforementioned RAC club, Burnaby South offers clubs in debating, improv, robotics, math, musical theatre, physics, business, international culture club, and Peacemakers. There is also a sustainability club called Green Team, that has worked tirelessly to implement recycling programs and other waste reduction initiatives at Burnaby South.

A Professional Theatre and Extensive Arts Programming is available at Burnaby South

Students to the Stage:

Burnaby South has an amazing performing opportunity for its arts students in the 600-seat Michael J. Fox Theatre, located within the school. The theatre is used for performances, conferences, and other school events. Burnaby South has a dedicated dance studio and a variety of dance programs including breakdancing, Hawaiian, jazz, and choreography, culminating in an annual dance recital in the spring. South also has an outstanding music program offering orchestra, jazz band, junior, intermediate and senior bands, guitar classes and choir.
