Byrne Creek Community Secondary School, located in the Kingsway South district zone of Burnaby, is an inclusive place of learning, serving the needs of a diverse population of 1100 students, as well as the surrounding community.
Byrne Creek has achieved high satisfaction ratings from its students, and in 2012, won a Whole Child Award by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development – the first time this honour has been bestowed on a Canadian school. Its basketball team is one of the best in the province – with terrific school spirit to match. Byrne Creek also has AP courses, outstanding music and dance departments, and is home to an exciting graphics and media arts program. Built in 2005, it is one of Burnaby’s newest schools, with state of the art facilities, including an impressive Centre for Dialogue for video conferencing and seminars.

Graphics and Media Arts Shine at Byrne Creek
The school has impressive computer labs with the latest software and hardware. Students with an interest in media arts can take the Career Education Graphics/Media Arts Program, which provides extensive training in graphic design. Completion of the two-year program gives participating students a portfolio and skills that will set them apart from the competition in an ever-changing job market. Students will be proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, After Effects, Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools.

Athletic opportunities at Byrne Creek are extensive, with volleyball, soccer, tennis, golf, track and field, rugby, swimming, table tennis, and badminton offered at different times of the year. Without question, basketball plays a starring role in the Athletic Department. This year, the boys’ basketball team has had a nail-biting ride to the BC Provincial Championships, and many of the school’s students have shown up at the games to cheer on the players! Basketball also rallies the greater community, who support the Bulldogs with pride.
Clubs at Byrne Creek Encourage Participation in Student Life
Byrne Creek offers a student government club which galvanises the school population through activities such as school dances, the year-end Bulldog Bash, and lunchtime fundraising events. Another popular club at Byrne Creek is the Leo Club, which is operated with support from the Burnaby Edmonds Lions Club, a service organisation. The Leo Club is involved in all kinds of good works, supporting the student body, as well as reaching out to the wider community.
