Moscrop Secondary Students Earn Top Tier Award at UBC Physics Olympics
One of the largest and oldest high school physics competitions in North America, the UBC Physics Olympics, held its 41st annual event in March
This year, Moscrop Secondary School’s Physics Team took home the title of 4th overall at the prestigious competition!
Over 700 high school students and teachers competed to show off their physics knowledge and inventions at the UBC Physics Olympics. There were students from 74 different schools competing in this year’s event.
Moscrop Secondary’s team built two machines and competed in four additional on-site events to earn the best finish the school has ever accomplished!

Burnaby Schools Earn High Scores in Math
Every year, hundreds of students attending school in Burnaby enter math contests throughout the school year.
Universities and employers are always telling us that they’re looking for a high school graduate with strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Math is an excellent way to support both those skills, and math contests showcase the results.
#1 in the Canadian National Mathematics League
This year, Boya Yang, the young math whiz from Burnaby South Secondary took 1st place at the Canadian National Mathematics League.
Held every year by the University of Windsor’s Mathematics Department, 1st place at this event means the winner is the best in the country! The contest is for Grades 8-12 and spans over six months with students taking a math test each month.
Plus, ‘overall school scores’ at the competition earned Moscrop Secondary 2nd place in Canada, and Burnaby South came in 12th.
Burnaby Students Get Premier Spots in Provincial Math Competition
Recently, students from Burnaby Mountain, Moscrop, Burnaby South, and Burnaby Central Secondary competed at UBC for the Provincial Math Challengers Competition.
The event had all of the top math schools from around the province of British Columbia attending. Moscrop Secondary’s Grade 9 team came in 2nd place, while the Grade 10 team placed 4th in the competition. Burnaby South’s Grade 10 team placed 7th.
The top ten individual students from each grade were announced and invited to compete in a face-off round.
The results put these Burnaby Schools students in the premier spots. They are considered the very top math students in BC!

4th place – Grade 9 – Anna Li, Moscrop
5th place – Grade 10 – Anna Rojrattanachai, Moscrop
5th place – Grade 9 – Bradley Louie, Burnaby Central

9th place – Grade 9 – Felix We, Burnaby South
11th place – Grade 10 – Winnie Wu, Moscrop
11th place – Grade 9 – Andy Chang, Moscrop
The Cross Country Mathlete
Each year, the University of Waterloo Students puts out several national math contests for students. All 8 Burnaby secondary schools enter.
This year, Eric Zhou, a Grade 11 Burnaby Mountain student had an outstanding showing in the Fermat Contest. His excellent performance earned him a trip to attend the Lloyd Auckland Invitational Mathematics Workshop from May 26 to June 1 at the University of Waterloo. Eric is only one of eighty students invited to the esteemed workshop.
