Making and Keeping New year's Resolutions

New Year, New You! A Guide to Making (and Keeping) New Year’s Resolutions for Burnaby Students

The New Year is upon us and school is back in full swing. After a fun-filled holiday season and the usual overindulgence that goes along with it, it may be time to get a handle on your spending and health habits to make this year a fantastic one. Here are a few things to consider when planning your health and financial goals:

The Pants are Tight and the Wallet is Light

The holiday season is when many of us indulge in rich foods and sweet treats. Right now, you may be paying for it with low energy and cravings for more of those not-so-healthy foods. This is the perfect time to hit the gym at school or around Burnaby. Some of the private gyms offer new year promotions – all the better to plan your fitness goals for 2018.

Prime Winter Season Means Prime Winter Sports

No, January doesn’t just have to be all about homework and spectator sports. It’s Canada! Don’t forget to get OUTSIDE this winter. The local mountains are beckoning. Hit Cypress Mountain for cross-country skiing in West Vancouver to enjoy the best outdoor winter workout there is. Cross-country skiing is a great option for cardio and fitness. Rentals can be found on the mountain or at Sigge’s in Vancouver – then you can cross-country ski to your (healthy) heart’s content on over 19 kilometres of groomed trails. Another bonus? Cross-country skiing is a bargain compared to pricier downhill skiing. Your body and your wallet will thank you!

January: A Moratorium on Spending?

As for atoning for fiscal overindulgence over the holiday season, there are so many ways to get back on track. Many people feel their wallets are thinner in January. If spending all your cash on gifts, socialising, and clothes have been a favourite pastime over the past month, then it may be time to put an end to that! There are great websites to help students keep spending in check. Proper budgeting, recording all your purchases, and nixing unnecessary expenditures on a daily basis will help you to separate the need from the want…and break the holiday spending cycle.

Resolutions: Make Them Manageable

Whether your goal is to make a winter sports team or just save a bit more money per month, make sure your goals are attainable. There is nothing worse than getting to the end of January to find you are even further away from reaching your goals than you were on New Year’s Day. Whatever the goal is, make sure you break it down into small mini goals that you can check off each week – be it an extra five minutes of cardio per day, another set of lunges, or, if your goal is financial prudence, to forgo one of those speciality coffee drinks each week.
