Parent & Custodian Expectations
Parent & Custodian Expectations
At Burnaby Schools, we know that international students thrive when they are supported by a caring team. That team includes not just our staff, but also the parent(s), or an appointed custodian if a parent is not residing in Burnaby.
Under Canadian immigration law and District policy, all students not residing with a parent must have a custodian appointed through a notarized document. This is required when applying for a Study Permit and ensures your child has local support throughout their stay.
We also ask that parents and custodians understand and fulfill the important responsibilities that come with their role. While our staff are here to help your child succeed, ongoing support from home is essential.

Expectations Vary by Role
We have clear expectations for:
- Parents residing overseas
- Parents residing in Burnaby with their child
- Appointed custodians
Parents who will be residing Burnaby with their child and do not speak English need to ensure they have a trusted individual who can communicate with school staff.
