Can my elementary aged student live with my friend, relative?

Burnaby School District’s International Student Program maintains a strict policy when it comes to the accommodation arrangements of elementary-aged students. Students planning to enroll in grades Kindergarten to Grade 5 must live with at least 1 parent full time. Students enrolling in Grade 6 may live with any blood relative including parents, aunt, uncle or grandparents. Students enrolling in Grade 7 may live with either a blood relative or an appropriate homestay family.

Can elementary aged students live in a homestay?

Students planning to enroll in grades Kindergarten to Grade 6 are not permitted to live in a homestay. Students planning to enroll in Grade 7 are permitted to live in a homestay.

What time of day does school start and finish?

School day start and finish times are 9 am to 3 pm for elementary schools.

What school facilities do Burnaby School District schools offer at elementary schools?

Burnaby School District elementary schools are equipped with the latest technologies and have computer labs, a library, music room, gymnasium, playing fields, and more.

What support is offered at elementary schools for Burnaby School District international students?

Burnaby School District’s elementary schools offer a range of different support services including an intensive welcome orientation, international student parent meetings and multilingual cultural support to students and parents.

If my child graduates from an elementary school will they go to the high school in the local catchment area or can they choose?

International elementary students would normally go to the high school affiliated to their elementary school. However, as per local students, there is the option of requesting another Burnaby high school provided there is space available.

How do international students get to and from school?

Most elementary students walk to school accompanied by the parent(s) or an older sibling. Some parents may choose to drive their child(ren) to school. Burnaby School District does not provide a school bus service.
