Top Science Awards Won By Burnaby Students

We are very proud of our amazing students who took part in regional and national science fairs recently. Over 300 students took part in the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair. From these 300 entrants, 17 students, including 8 Burnaby students, were invited to attend the national Canada Wide Science Fair. 500 students attended the national fair in New Brunswick.

Regional and National Science Fairs

The Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair

The Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair (GVRSF) invites students from the 10 school districts in the Lower Mainland. The science fair is open to students from public, private and home schools. This means that over 100,000 students from grades 7 to 12 are eligible to participate in the fair. The GVRSF aims to “encourage youth to conduct research and experimentation in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.”

Canada Wide Science Fair

The Canada Wide Science Fair took place in Fredericton, New Brunswick this year. 500 students from across Canada were invited to take part, which included 8 from Burnaby. The event is very well regarded and has $1,000,000 worth of prizes, awards and scholarships up for grabs. Students were encouraged to tackle real-world issues using science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Science Facilities in Burnaby

Part of our students’ success at the regional and national science fairs is due in part to the amazing facilities and courses in our schools. Burnaby School District 41 is committed to providing the best opportunities possible to allow our students to achieve their potential.

Advanced Placement Courses

In Physics 12, Biology 12 and Chemistry 12 offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Students can even gain university credits if they achieve certain results. Students in grades 8 to 11 can also take advantage of honour courses. To be eligible for the honours courses students must achieve exam scores of 80% or higher. AP courses are available at all Burnaby schools, however, the individual courses may vary between schools. Courses include calculus, statistics, computer science, biology and chemistry.

AP Capstone Diploma Program

AP Capstone is a diploma program from the College Board. It’s based on two year-long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. It focuses on the main subject areas of chemistry, biology, physics 1 and physics 2 – as well as courses in math, computer science, and the humanities. The program encourages students to use their oral competence, collaboration and writing skills to defend arguments. The Diploma Program is available in Burnaby North and Burnaby South Secondary Schools.
