Winter Weather in Burnaby

During the winter months in Burnaby, the weather can change drastically overnight. Waking up to fresh snow outside isn’t an uncommon sight around Metro Vancouver. And while it’s every kid’s dream to wake up to a ‘snow day’…

Generally, all schools remain OPEN unless there is heavy snowfall preventing transportation, or other circumstances – such as a power outage or other weather-related damages.

The Burnaby School District will do its best to communicate school or district-wide closures by 6:30 am at BurnabySchools.ca

In power outage situations updating the website on time may not be possible. Another way to learn about school closures is through our local news radio stations:

  • CBC AM 690 radio
  • News AM 1130 radio
  • CKNW AM 980 radio
  • Fairchild AM 1470 radio

Or TV channels:

  • Global TV
  • CBC TV
  • CityNews
  • CTV BC

If you are unsure whether or not the school is open, please walk your child to the door of the school. And if for any reason you feel that your student cannot travel safely, please notify the school that your child will be absent.

If weather conditions throughout the day create a concern for the safety of students returning home, a decision may be made to dismiss students early. This will be communicated to parents through the schools’ normal communications channels.

You can find more information about the closures of schools for reasons of weather or other causes in our Policy Statement.
